Abilene Founder Lions Club - A.E. Wells Scholarship

The Abilene Founder Lions Club established this scholarship in 1975 in honor of A. E. “Poly” Wells. Mr. Wells was a prominent Abilene educator, civic leader, and long-time member of the Abilene Founder Lions Club. He was the superintendent of the Abilene Independent School District for twenty-three years. Mr. Wells was born October 11, 1909 in Parker County. He graduated from Polytechnic High School in Fort Worth, received the bachelor of arts degree from Abilene Christian University, and masters degree in education from Colorado State College of Education. He earned his nickname “Poly” when as a freshman at ACU he frequently wore his bright orange and black letter sweaters earned as a four-sport letterman at Polytech High. Mr. Wells died in May, 1995 at age of 85. His legacy continues to be remembered each year when the Abilene Founder Lions Club selects a worthy student for this distinguished scholarship.
